
This article focuses on the top tier of Nigerian football league. The competition started in 1973 and in as recent as 2003 it became a professional league with the League management Company promoting self sufficiency in clubs.
In year 2012, The Nigerian league was ranked as the 24th best league in the World by the IFFHS(International Federation of Football History and Statistics)
Globacom Telecommunication are the current sponsor of the tournament thus its current name Glo Premiere League.
The league is contested by 20 football clubs with the top two teams partaking in the CAF champions league while the third position competes in the Confederation cup. The next season starts on the 21st of February 2016.
In the past, the super four tournament was hosted at a neutral ground to ascertain the winner of the league by pitting the top four teams in a round-robin format. Now it is only a preseason tournament.
Eyimba Football Club of Aba are the most successful club in Nigerian premier league history with 7 titles to their name, they are closely followed by Rangers International of Enugu with 6 titles, however none of their titles have come in the modern era with their most recent triumph in 1984.
Eyimba are the most successful since the tournament was refurbished in year 2003 with a total of five triumphs including their triumph in the concluded season while Kano Pillars are next with three titles. Eyimba Football club is also the only Nigerian club to be successful on the continental stage with their back to back CAF champions league wins in 2003 and 2004.
The top scorer for last season was Gbolahan Salami with 17 goals. He's already been capped 13 times by the Nigerian national team and currently plays for Warri Wolves of Warri in Delta state and would be looking to improve on their previous finish as second runners up and also have a strong showing at the Confederations cup.
Ikorodu United are the newest team in the top tier of the tournament and are expected to have a good season.
