3 Things Arsenal Boss Arsene Wenger Needs To Learn From The New Chelsea Manager Conte
Arsene Wenger is indeed the best Arsenal manager ever. I just said it, after all the articles in which I have supported the "Wenger out" mob. Yes, the Frenchman is the best manager that we had of all time, in my opinion. Despite that, this slowly aging version of Wenger has not really grown as a manager. Most managers mature with age, but for some reason, our beloved boss has not. He has not evolved over the years completely, which has brought about his downfallin recent times. He has missed opportunities to win trophies, titles which he would have easily won back in the day when he was young and full of ideas and energy. The Premier League title from the recently concluded campaign will be the best example of how he has managed to screw up things when welooked on top of our game and heading for glory. Surely, the players deserve the blame as well, yet isn't it the manager's job to make them perform when it matters the most?Remember the first leg against Barcelona. Our defence was brilliant. Had we defended like that in the domestic league, dare I say "no team could have touched us". We would have won the league by a mile. Yet, such performances are rare to see from the Gunners these days, though it was a spectacle of maturity and class. Hereby ignore the result on that day. However, on a serious note I feel that rather than just the players or the team growing as a whole, Wenger needs to grow as well. Till the time he does not acknowledge that fact, no matter how many players he signs, the results won't change eventually. We will be a top four club, rather than champions, with due credit to him for that after watching Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool fail to do that.Still, as a person who wants him to succeed once again, here are three things I feel that Wenger canlearn from a manager like Antonio Conte, who is all set to take over at Stamford Bridge now:
3. The perfect defence:We may have one of the best attacks in Europe atpresent, yet we keep losing games/points when it matters the most. One defensive error and our 1-0win turn into a 1-1 or a 1-2, which is not acceptable when you are a top club in England. If anyone noticed, Pep Guardiola's Bayern Munich side failed in the Champions League due to the same reason. That is why a manager like Jose Mourinho has had so much success. They focus on the defensive line first, then build the attack. No, it does not mean that we should change our playing style, yet we need to add the right kind of players. An aging Per Mertesacker will not win us trophies, though he has his plus points as well. His positioning is superb at the back along with leadership skills, yet his lack of pace puts him in trouble against most sides which flaunt quick, young attacking players. Laurent Koscielny can't handle the back-line on his own, as Gabriel has been quite disappointing so far, especially when itmattered the most. Changes need to be made andplayers need to be signed, which a manager like Conte is definitely not hesitant to do. He is targeting tough, tall and skillful defenders from his time back in Italy and will look to bring them to west London, as soon as possible. Something, which we need Wenger to do as well.Embed from Getty Images
2. Drop/Replace players based on current form:Conte has made it clear that he will only play the type of players which he feels suit his style. He has not given any hopes to the regular first team stars at Chelsea that their place in their side is ensured. The Italian boss would rather pick thembased on their current form and how they performfor him. This is something that Wenger needs to apply as well. Sticking with a player like Olivier Giroud, who was going through a goal drought and not giving enough chances to Joel Campbell, when he was in superb form, eventually dropping him to the bench was really not in the best interest of the club. There has been a slight improvement in this department, with the departure of Tomas Rosickyand Mikel Arteta from the Emirates, who were barely used and were still part of the squad. On the other hand, a player like Aaron Ramsey never gets dropped from the side though he might be a pain to watch sometimes. There is no competitionfor places for certain players, which can surely prove to be an incentive to perform better at times, which Wenger still needs to learn after so many years of being in charge. 1. Spend money:The incoming Chelsea boss is not shy at spending money to buy the right kind of players that he wants should play for him. Though for some reason Wenger was in his own"wonderland" last summer and let a lot of world class players move elsewhere. How often have we heard about Wenger's so-called "wish-list" of players that he could have signed over the years, but his miserly nature cost us.Yes, Mesut Ozil and Alexis have been good signings over the years, but we need more. GranitXhaka'sapparent signingso early in the transfer window has given the fans hope that more qualityplayers like Elneny and Xhaka are coming, thoughone would just be concerned that we do not keep deals for deadline day, as Wenger has been doingfor quite some time now and failing to sign the player eventually.
